Schools

Leelanau Montessori is a public school academy, supports a non-discriminatory open enrollment process, and is the place to go for a more active, non-traditional education for your child from pre-school to 6th grade. The Leelanau Montessori Public School Academy “nurtures the whole child in a prepared environment based on respect, individuality, a love of learning, and freedom with responsibility.” It is located on the Suttons Bay Schools campus, and is tuition based for children 1-1/2 to 4 years old, while being free for children aged 5 and older.

Suttons Bay Public Schools are comprised of the Lil’ Norsemen Early Childhood Learning Center, the Suttons Bay Elementary (Pre-K through 5) and the Suttons Bay High School (6th-12th). As an alternative, students could elect to be enrolled in the Suttons Bay Virtual School, which is a tuition-free, public school based out of Suttons Bay Public Schools.  This program provides home-based schooling for students spanning Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Local Info

This area caters heavily to the wine lovers and connoisseurs, on the stretch of the beautiful Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail. Choose from L Mawby Vineyards, Ciccone Vineyard and Winery, the Chateau de Leelanau, or the Willow Vineyard and Winery for their tastings, intimate events, and evenings of unforgettable flavor.  If you crave adventure, choose the route of the Cider mill and visit Suttons Bay Ciders for their fermented ciders. Using their small, farm-based ciders in hard cider production, the cider farm is also “experimenting with blending cider with white wine grapes to create full-bodied and oak-aged ciders that develop complex flavors from sur-lie barrel and bottle aging.”

A short jaunt outside the Wine trail, you’ll find Shady Lane Cellars and their provision of shopping, wine club, and events. If you have relaxation on the mind, however, you may be interested in the Black Star Farms of Suttons Bay; this little Bed and Breakfast offers modern rooms, gourmet breakfasts and dining, a spa with a sauna, wine tastings in the evenings, and more.
